Chef Jim Shirley has expanded his collection of popular SoWal restaurants with the opening of North Beach Tortilla Co. (NBTC), a taco and tequila bar on the bay at the 331 bridge.
Excellent sunset views and happy hour offerings already have us hanging out regularly on the white sand beach, working to disprove (prove?) the slogan painted over the beachside bar, “Tequila Always Wins.”
NBTC is on the first level of the two-story building at the foot of the bridge that has been a gathering place through the years, housing Bailey’s On The Bay, The Three-Thirty-One, Borago (for a brief stint as their Grayton location was damaged by fire) and will also continue to be a wedding and events venue with expansive beach and large covered dock.
The restaurant has a large covered deck along the beach with outdoor seating and a wraparound bar featuring a selection of 100 tequilas, craft cocktails, and draft beer. The menu is a mix of Spanish, Southwestern, and Florida cuisine – with a strong emphasis on fresh, made-from-scratch food using carefully sourced ingredients and authentic cooking methods. For Chef Shirley, his staff, and guests, it’s a hangout where ‘Tacos Grow On Trees and Tequila Always Wins.’
The structure was originally built from the pylons of an old drawbridge, but has since been spruced up with some cool features including a glass wall that looks out on the white sand beach and the bay. Inside you’ll find art depicting a Taco Tree by local artist, Andy Saczynski. The building itself has for many years been a welcoming landmark for everyone coming to and from South Walton.
NBTC is open daily from 4-10PM. Menu is available at www.northbeachtortillaco.com. Follow @northbeachtaco on Facebook and Instagram.
